Indiana bears a heavy burden of chemical pollution, ranking first nationwide for total pollution releases per square mile and last among all 50 states for toxic chemical pollution and associated health risks, according to U.S. News and World Report. With 39 hazardous waste sites designated as “Superfund” cleanup sites by the Environmental Protection Agency, Indiana has one of the nation’s most diverse portfolios of chemical pollution.
Many of these problems can be traced to Indiana’s historically vital role in manufacturing, particularly within pharmaceutical development and the broader chemical industry. While these sectors are powerhouses for the state’s economy, this legacy of industrial development has left Hoosiers grappling with significant environmental challenges.
